Mount Elbert (14,440ft.), within Colorado's Sawatch Range, is the tallest peak in the state. There are a few routes to the summit, though we prefer the Class 2 Southeast Ridge approach, which is less busy and a bit more challenging at 10.5 miles roundtrip with ~4,500ft. of elevation gain.
Uncompahgre Peak (14,321ft.), within Colorado's incomparable Uncompahgre Wilderness and the San Juan Mountain Range, is the sixth tallest peak in the state. The standard route to the summit is via the Class 2 South Ridge, which is about 7.4 miles roundtrip with ~3,000ft. of gain.
Redcloud Peak (14,034ft.) and Sunshine Peak (14,001ft.) are two of the most prominent peaks in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The most common hiking route is Sunshine Peak via Redcloud Peak's Northeast Ridge route, a strenuous Class 2 12.0 mile trail that begins at the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch Trailhead.
